Giants 2015 NFL Draft Review

 

ERECK FLOWERS, OT (First-Round Pick, Ninth Overall)

Big Blue filled a hole on the offensive line by selecting Ereck Flowers, an offensive tackle from the University of Miami.

  • Flowers is a mammoth human being and is listed at 6-foot-6 and 329 pounds.
  • The Miami native was rated as a four-star prospect by Scout and Rivals in high school.
  • He played all 12 games in 2012 as a right tackle as freshman with the Hurricanes, making four starts.
  • The 21-year-old would end up switching over to left tackle in his sophomore season and started all 12 games.
  • Flowers earned Second-Team All-ACC honors for his play in 2014.

QUOTE: “[Flowers] is a young guy we’re really excited about,” said coach Tom Coughlin. “He’s a tough guy, he’s a quiet guy. He’ll learn real fast and be very productive for a long time.

LANDON COLLINS, S (Second-Round Pick, 33rd Overall)

The Giants addressed a need in their secondary by drafting Landon Collins, a safety from the University of Alabama.

  • Collins is an aggressive, physically gifted player standing 6-feet tall and weighing in at 228 pounds.
  • The Louisiana native was a consensus five-star prospect coming out of high school and was the top-ranked safety in the 2015 NFL Draft.
  • He has a well-earned repuation as an iron man after never missing a game at Alabama, appearing in all 41 career contests.
  • The 21-year-old became a starter in 2013 after his predecessor suffered a season-ending injury and went on to finish the year with 70 tackles and two interceptions.
  • This past season as a junior and full-time starter, Collins led the Crimson Tide with 98 tackles and three interceptions and was named a unanimous All-American.
  • Collins finished his college career with 190 tackles, 13 passes defendes, five interceptions, three forced fumbles and one touchdown.

OWAMAGBE ODIGHIZUWA, DE (Third-Round Pick, 74th Overall)

Big Blue added another pass rusher in the third round by selecting defensive end Owamagbe Odigihizuwa out of UCLA.

  • Odighizuwa is listed at 6-foot-3, 270 pounds.
  • The 23-year-old didn’t start playing football until the eighth grade.
  • He was considered a five-star recruit by scouting site Rivals.com before choosing to attend UCLA in 2010.
  • Odighizuwa has battled injuries in the past and missed the 2013 season with surgery to both hips.
  • He was selected as a second-team All-Pac-12 player in 2014 after recording six sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss.
  • Odighizuwa is of Nigerian descent.

MYKKELE THOMPSON, S (Fifth-Round Pick, 144th Overall)

The Giants bolstered their secondany with another safety in the fifth round by drafting Mykkele Thompson from the University of Texas.

  • Thompson is a rangy defensive back listed at 6-foot-2 and 191 pounds.
  • He was a four-year player at Texas and appeared in all 52 career games with 31 starts.
  • As a senior this past season, Thompson started all 13 games at safety or nickel cornerback.
  • Finished college career with 213 tackles, two interceptions and two forced fumbles.
  • Is also a special-teams ace with three career blocked punts.
  • He was a four-year letterman in high school in track and field.
  • Thompson was born in Naples, Italy and has also lived in England and Georgia (USA) before settling in San Antonio, Texas in 2002.

GEREMY DAVIS, WR (Sixth-Round Pick, 186th Overall)

The G-Men’s streak of selecting defenders ended in the sixth round, as the team drafted wide receiver Geremy Davis out of University of Connecticut.

  • Davis is a big target at 6-foot-2, 216 pounds.
  • He caught a pass in every college game played, finshing with a reception in 36 consecutive contests.
  • Entered the 2014 campaign on the Preseason Biletnikoff Award Watch List, which is presented annually to the most outstanding receiver in college football.
  • Averaged 13.9 yards per reception throughout his college career and finished with seven touchdowns.
  • Davis finished his career at UCONN as the most prolific receiver in the school’s FBS history with career marks of 165 receptions and 2,292 receiving yards.

BOBBY HART, OG (Seventh-Round Pick, 226th Overall)

Big Blue added a big ol’ helping of beef in the seventh round by selecting offensive guard Bobby Hart from Florida State University with their final pick of the 2015 NFL Draft.

  • Hart is a mountain of a man at 6-foot-5, 329 pounds.
  • He started nine games his freshman season at just 17 years old.
  • The Lauderhill, Florida native is a two-time All-ACC honoree and was a pivotal part of Florida State’s national championship winning team in 2013.
  • Started all 28 games the past two seasons and blocked for Heisman Trophy winner and 2015 first overall draft pick Jameis Winston.
  • Hart played on a highly-ranked AAU basketball team in high school and competed against now NBA players Jared Sullinger (Boston Celtics) and Austin Rivers (Los Angeles Clippers).
